FOUNDER

RODRIGO GUTIERREZ

Corialent

12 years ago, Rodrigo decided that the Coca Colas of the world shouldn’t be the only ones who get to have all the fun in the advertising industry. He was sick of all the dull, corporate, navy blue and white B2B work out there. Business people are people too. Corialent specializes in B2B marketing that doesn’t suck. And they want to get the rest of the industry drinking that delicious KoolAid.

Critical Thinking

Critical thinking may be defined as an ability to engage in independent and creative thinking using logic. In essence, critical thinking takes you to the ability to reason analytically. It's all about being a proactive learner and not a passive receiver of knowledge. You see, just like learning new facts, critiquing ideas and analyzing data helps you build your knowledge base. Not only that but it helps you build self-esteem, which is very important when you become an adult and enter the work force.

Think of critical thinking as problem solving. In many instances, when we encounter a problem that we don't know how to solve we begin to make decisions. In many cases these decisions are incorrect and costly. Critical thinking helps us avoid making poor decisions and costly mistakes. This is because problem solving and effective decision making are two distinct concepts. You can learn to think critically, but if you don't know how to apply your critical thinking skills in the workplace then you will be ineffective at making any improvements in your job performance.

There are many ways to approach critical thinking skills and problem solving. I believe that by taking a critical eye towards everything we come into contact with that we will become better critical thinkers. I also believe that we can all benefit from applying critical thinking skills in our every day life. Just being aware that this is possible is a great benefit.

The first step in improving your critical thinking skills is to start using critical thinking skills to problem solve. Make sure that you never walk into a situation without using critical thinking skills. When walking into a room where there is a problem, first ask yourself what the problem is, what the solution would be and what are the consequences of not doing that. This is just a simple example, try it.

Next, when making decisions make sure that you are thinking critically. It sounds simple but you will be surprised by how many people base their decisions on their gut feeling or on what they think others might think. To better help yourself with decision making always think critically and determine for yourself what options are best for the outcome.

Learn to embrace uncertainty. Uncertainty is a good friend when you are problem solving because uncertainty will make you do things that you wouldn't have done otherwise. One of the most common reasons why problem solvers fail is because they are afraid to take risks. They are afraid of making the wrong decision and therefore they will not take calculated risks. You must learn to overcome your hesitation to make a decision and instead embrace uncertainty.

Finally, to improve your critical thinking skills you must constantly practice them. This means doing them at home, at work, even while driving. If you practice them on paper first, try to solve problems using a problem solving method that is developed by a professional. Then, when you feel comfortable start applying those methods in real life situations. Remember to be honest with yourself and tell yourself when you aren't fully confident that you can solve a particular problem.

Keep these critical thinking skills in mind at all times and use them whenever possible. Make sure that you understand that it doesn't matter what someone else thinks of your actions, what really matters is how you feel about it. When you practice critical thinking skills you will find that your confidence will grow and you will become a better problem solver. Just remember that no one was born knowing how to solve problems. It takes time, practice, and experience to develop your critical thinking skills.
